After the success of last year's Galentine's event, we decided to turn it into an annual occasion. Having plenty of female friends as an ambitious women in your 20s and 30s is invaluable. They are there to listen to the ups and downs of your working life, encourage you to go for that promotion, understand your dedication to your career, and just be there for you on a Friday night for after work drinks. But making friends as an adult can be tough, so what better than a networking event of like-minded ladies to get those relationships blossoming.
We started off with an ice-breaker. Attending a networking event can be a daunting experience for many people, especially those who come alone, so we do everything we can to ensure everyone feels welcome and comfortable from the start.
This evening's ice-breaker was a task called "Find a Friend". On each sheet of paper, handed out on arrival, were a series of statements relating to friendships and Valentine's Day. The idea was to try and find attendees who matched each statement, for example, someone who still has a friend from primary school, was given a bouquet of flowers, or spent Valentine's day with their friends. It certainly worked, and for the first 45 minutes of the event, the girls stood chatting and finding out more about one another.
It was then time to split into teams. We carefully organise teams in advance for 2 reasons; one, because we know how uncomfortable it can be for some people to ask to join a group of women who know each other when they don't know anyone, and two, because we want to ensure that everyone meets relevant people according to their industry. And what's the best way to get each team comfortable with each other?! By taking a group selfie, of course!
